INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY OFFICE OF SERBIA & MONTENEGRO (IPO)


INSTITUTION

Establishing an institution for the industrial property protection represents a conventional obligation of all the countries member parties to the Paris Union for the Protection of Intellectual Property. Serbia and Montenegro was in the succession to the Kingdom of Serbia, one of the 11 states establisher of the Paris Union (1883), but Administration for the Industrial property protection it founded considerably later, on 15 of November, 1920. That institution up to now has changed its name, thus in its history was :Federal Administration for Patents (1956), Patent Bureau (1958), Federal Patent Office (1967), Federal Intellectual Property Office ( from 1994) and nowadays –The Intellectual Property Office (from 2003).

COMPETENCE
From its very beginnings, this Office is an authority in administration of patents, trademarks, industrial designs and it has been in charge of geographical indications since 1981. In addition this institution is in charge of the copy right and related rights.
The IPR Office has public registers in which applications are registered for the confirmation of IP Rights (applications).After completion of aknowledged registrated rights of industrial property in suitable registers, a document of aknowledged right is issued to the holder.

ORGANIZATIONAL STRUCTURE
According to the present sistematisation Intellectual Property Office of Sebia and Montenegro has total 110 emploees, and comprise the following sectors:
Patent Sector
Distinctive Signs Sector
Technical-Technology Information Sector
Registers and general affair sector
Twelve departments are functioning inside stated sectors.
